Featured Job Post: Managing Editor and Assistant VP at Texas State University–San Marcos

Texas State University–San Marcos is seeking an assistant vice president of university advancement and managing editor for Hillviews magazine. Located between San Antonio and Austin, San Marcos has been named BusinessWeek’s “Best Places to Raise Your Kids,” and Texas State University–San Marcos is the sixth-largest university in the state, with more than 32,500 students from 47 states and 73 nations (CollegePortraits.org). Hillviews, the university’s quarterly magazine, has a circulation of 25,000 copies distributed to friends of Texas State.
The assistant vice president of university advancement and managing editor for Hillviews will work with the university advancement and news service media teams to oversee the production of Hillviews magazine, create the president’s “From the Hill” newsletter, and assist with speech writing. Responsibilities will include planning and writing magazine content; overseeing magazine budgets; working with magazine designers and photographers; soliciting magazine ads; preparing talking points, annual reports, and newsletters for the president, including researching statistics and quotes; and assisting with capital campaigns.
This full-time assistant vice president and managing editor position requires relevant experience producing reports, speeches, and other communications; working with team members, including designers and other writers; using word processing, the Internet, and social media; and researching current information. The candidate must also demonstrate a basic knowledge of graphic design and the ability to identify and develop content appropriate to audiences. Candidates who have the following will be preferred: a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or English; a master’s degree; five or more years of experience in public relations, communications, or publications, including executive speech writing, writing, and editing; and experience with print and online periodicals, writer supervision, fundraising communications, and senior university leadership. The yearly salary range for the position is between $62,000 and $72,000.
