First Book: Books for Kids Affected by Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane relief and recovery efforts are still in full swing to help the millions of people affected by Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall in the United States one week ago. There are a number of safe and effective organizations that can turn your donations into much-needed resources for the thousands who were left homeless and the many more who lost power or had property damaged. One opportunity you may not have heard about and that may appeal especially to literacy-loving copyeditors: helping First Book restock the libraries of schools and homes damaged by the storm.
First Book, an organization dedicated to ending illiteracy, distributed more than 5 million books after Hurricane Katrina and is now raising funds to restore some of the books lost in Hurricane Sandy. Each donation of $10 provides 4 books for children, and donations can be made securely online at the First Book’s Hurricane Sandy donation page.
