Is it spelled Ketchup or Catsup? And if it is Catsup, do we pronounce it the way it is spelled?

Got to know.

Ketchup v. Catsup

I read a story somewhere - unretrievable now - that one of these names was *invented* when a ketchup (or catsup) manufacturer was leery of using the *other* name, thinking that it had possibly been trademarked by a competitor.

It's Ketchup *and* Catsup

Either is correct, although catsup is considered a variant of ketchup by many dictionaries. Pronunciation varies as well, as The American Heritage Dictionary notes:

ketch·up (kĕchəp, kăch-) also catch·up (kăchəp, kĕch-) or cat·sup (kătsəp, kăchəp, kĕch-)
