In the News: Books and Oscar Nods

The 2012 Academy Awards Nominations List was announced this week. The academy invites us to “celebrate the movies in all of us,” but celebrating and recognizing the books and tales that led to the movies is a little more my speed.
By my count, there are eighteen nominated films that are from (or about) books or stories. Keir Graff of Booklist seems to agree with my count. His helpful post on the Booklist Online blog Likely Stories includes links to Booklist reviews—and the video of “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore,” a delightful animated short film. Margaret Bristol of Bookish has a Huffington Post slideshow of the “11 Oscar Book Adaptations” for the major categories, including two-thirds of the nominees for best picture.
As Bristol notes, you have less than five weeks to read all of the books before seeing all of the movies before watching the awards. Best of luck to you!
