The down side of being one of the lucky people who got to read Carol Fisher Saller’s book The Subversive Copy Editor before it was published was that I was also one of the first people to feel that sense of regret you get when you’ve just finished a great book and wish there were more of it.
Well, now there is, in a way: Saller is now blogging at (of course) The Subversive Copy Editor Blog. The first blog entry was posted on May 13.
Reading Saller’s common-sense observations is a lot like meditation for me (okay, yes, editors are a tad peculiar to begin with, and perhaps I am one of the oddest). I feel calmer, reassured that a wiser person than I is facing the same kinds of editorial frustrations and making the kinds of choices in dealing with them that I can emulate.
This is making Saller’s writing sound ponderous and worthy, when it’s anything but. Try the post “Editorial Road Rage” and you’ll see what I mean.
Memorial Day Break We’ll take a break in observance of Memorial Day next week; the Tip will return on June 7. If you’re editing any copy about Memorial Day, by the way, do remember that we observe this holiday, rather than celebrate it (unlike Independence Day, which we do celebrate).![]()
