Happy New Year, copyeditors!
Before the holidays, I wrote a response to whether editors can be trained. I believe they can, and the biggest boost to success is one-on-one training and feedback. It’s rare to see this kind of training in the office environment and even rarer for freelancers.
A few organizations offer mentoring to their members, including:
Now we’ll add Copyediting to the list.
In my article, I asked for volunteer mentors, and I now have a short list of available mentors. If you’re interested in being mentored by a fellow copyeditor, email me the following information:
- Your name and email address
- Your current skills and experience
- A short description of what you want from the mentorship
Be sure to include what type of content you edit; I’d like to match folks as closely as I can. It will then be up to the mentor and mentee to decide how to work the relationship. For now, this opportunity is open to all readers, not just paying members.
We’ll test the program and see how it goes. If all goes well, I’ll call for more mentors and mentees in the future.
Thank you to all who’ve volunteered so far. Your willingness to help one or two in our field helps everyone in our field.
It’s not too late to volunteer to mentor someone. Email me your interest and include your skills and experience.
